I never really have a sweet tooth. As such, most of my friends know I don’t eat desserts most of the time. I just found that putting something so sweet into the mouth just destroys the savoury resonance in my mouth, if I really liked the main dish.
However, there are occasions that this ritual is thrown out of the window. The Sweet Spot is one of them.
Locates at the entrance end of The Spot from the Randwick Junction, The Sweet Spot is the place for me to go when I want some comfort food after a horrid day of work, or to reward myself if I felt I had accomplished something to be proud of.
The Sweet Spot is a very small shop, sometimes it is a bit too echoey and claustrophobic when it is full, but the truth is, it is quite full during most of the busy service hours. I guess locating right opposite to a girl’s college and near the Ritz Cinema does have its advantage. But for me the main attraction is, despite it is called The Sweet Spot, most of the items are not overly sweet and strikes the right balance for me.
For me I am not a big fan of chocolate, well, except for Tim Tams. So usually when I go there, I go for the fruitier items on the menu. Among them some of my favourites are the Caprioska, a lemon-lime mousse cake sitting on a short bread base and a lychee and vanilla sponge. What I like about it is that the whole thing is wrapped inside a raspberry like cracking shell with a small macaron on top. The presentation is beautiful and enticing and it feels like it is offering a lot for a small piece of dessert. The joy of cracking that shell open for the yummy mousse and sponge cake was just extremely fulfilling. Another of my favourites is the Autumn Day, a mousse cake that is wrapped around by fresh strawberries with a water drop like macron on top of a thick layer of strawberry jam. I like the slight sourness of this cake that is balance by the sweet freshness of the mousse. The macron and the jam on the top provide added textures to the bite that make the cake feel a lot let monotonous.
Apart from a lot of choices for yummy cakes from traditional Tiramisu and Black Forest to intriguing Pistachio and Panna Cotta, The Sweet Spot also has a whole cabinet of biscuits for you to choose from, in case you are not a fan of cakes. The cabinet locates right opposite to the cake display and coffee station, and every piece of them look delicious. I am not a huge biscuit fan (well, again except for Tim Tams…what is my obsession with Tim Tams?), but I had tried one or two from my friend’s order (although I can’t remember what they called, but they have some sugar icing on them), and they were pretty good. I had also once bought a small box of macaron right before my 9 hour flight to visit my parents, and they still lived up to the hype I told them when we opened them after I got home from the flight and the commute from the airport to my parent’s place (although I think I did ask the cabin crew to put it into the fridge on the flight during the journey).
The other thing I like about The Sweet Spot is its chai latte. A lot of times in many other places, the chai lattes are either too sweet, too cinnamon or too milky. But The Sweet Spot always managed to strike the balance of all three for me every time I ordered one. That is quite impressive as they have different baristas at the coffee station during their long business hours, that kind of consistency in quality is something I really appreciate, for I knew that when I order for a chai latte, I got exactly what I wanted.
The Sweet Spot doesn’t just sell individual slices of cakes, they also have large size cakes for different occasions and events. I had ordered a few for different occasions and the general consensus was that they were great and yummy. If you are more of a creative person and want some creative flares for your parties and events, you can also work with the shop to design your own cake based on their available ingredients. Over the years, I have seen football field cakes, Sonic the Hedgehog cakes, Pokemon cakes, Cinderella Castle cakes etc. I don’t know how hard they are to build (they all look hard to me, maybe except for the football field one), but it seems that if you can think of it, they can build it, maybe unless they require some defying gravity acts.
The Sweet Spot locates on 18 Perouse Rd, Randwick. You can also visit their web site to find out more of their menu and services.
