Maroubra Pavilion Beach Front is not your cheapest choice for breakfast around the area. Nor is it the one that has the greatest variety of choices for food. However, it is one of the few places around that you can have a full panoramic view of Maroubra Beach while catching up with friends for a meal at a reasonable price.
Of course, if I am just paying for the view, I won’t be going back there again and again throughout the years. I personally like their food and it does have a good ambient environment for dining, good weather or not i.e. nice view or not.
I first went there because one of my friends recommended it so we went there with other friends for a catch-up breakfast. The breakfast menu is quite standard, you got your usual really healthy choices (it is in the eastern suburbs after all) and the heavy-duty traditional breakfast. I mostly go for the Ultimate Breakfast ($22) as I always thought if I want to go out for breakfast, I want everything I can eat. Strange mentality but that’s me. I am not a big bacon fan. I always feel bacons are great for the nose and so so for the taste. Also, a lot of places then to overdo their bacons in a way that they are either burned or too crusty. Of course, for some places, the fact that there is a pool of oil left in the plate was a huge put off for me. However, bacon at the Pavilion are usually quite well done. It has the texture for the bites I wanted and also rarely would I find other components on the plate swimming in a pool of grease. That’s probably why I quite enjoy going back. Some people might think it is weird that I judge on a plate of breakfast by this one thing, but then I think everyone has his preference.
The other occasional choice for me, if I want to have a bit of variety for my diet, is the vegetarian breakfast ($22). I am a huge avocado fan – I honestly believe everything tastes better with avocado – so if I am craving for avocado that morning, the vegetarian breakfast will be my go-to breakfast. Of course, the fact that they have spinach (another one of my favourite vege) with this choice is a big bonus for me.
The new kid on the block for me is the hot and spicy breakfast ($22). When I saw it for the first time on my table, my inner self was thinking I will probably need a burger in an hour’s time, for there doesn’t seem to be a lot of items on the plate. However, when I finished it, I knew I was wrong, as I did feel very filled up despite the looks of the food. That’s definitely another case of can’t just things by their look. I personally would prefer it to be spicier as if I eat spicy food, I really want the hit, and my heat tolerance is quite high after all these years. However, I think as an item on the menu that caters for a lot of people, the current degree of spiciness will do for most clients.
Over the years, I had one birthday lunch at the Pavilion. The lunch menu and its food are equally good, although I did feel that they are quite budget challenging when it comes to price. However, the food quality is what you are paying for, so you won’t get budget food made from budget ingredient while paying a premium simply because you are in the suburbs. For me it is definitely a special occasion treat.
On the whole Maroubra Pavilion Beach Front is a great dining experience for me over the years. Staff members are mostly friendly even when they are flat out and they are very accommodating to special needs e.g. one of my friends is on wheel chair so every time they will make sure out table has easy passage across the space. And to be honest, nothing beats a great breakfast with friends listening to the sound of waves greeting the shores.
