Can you tell the readers more about yourself?
My name is Reyne (pronounced as ‘rain’) Brady. I go by the stage name Mugy as a Hip Hop artist and actor. I am your typical 28 year old Whiteboi and All-Round 5 Element Knowledge Hip Hop Kido
Where do you come from?
I was born in Cronulla Sydney New South Wales Australia but moved to The Central Coast (About 1 hour and a half north of Sydney CBD) when I was 3 and been living here since.
Where do you usually perform around?
I usually perform around The Coast & Sydney as a solo artist.
When did you first aspire to become a musician and what was the trigger?
I became interested in hip-hop music and its culture when I was 14 around 2005 during my early years in High School
I was a bit of a loner which was bullied at school a lot. The stress and experience impacted on my schooling and my grades were failing. I felt like I had no avenue where I would be in life when I finished school. So I saved up some money and bought myself an iPod and started listening to artists such as Eminem, 50 Cent, Tupac Shakur, Rakim, NaS, DMX, Eminem, Shaggy 2 Dope etc.
Eminem was the one I could related to the most (Even to this day). I know It sounds cliché because I’m a typical Whiteboi myself, but the aggression / anger in his lyrics really resonated with what I was experiencing in school with all the bullying I got. It kinda gave me an outlet to express ‘I Dont give a f***’ and a platform to fight back and take no sh** in this world
At the beginning I would drop down small rhymes in my workbook but I knew if I wanted to progress I would have to write full lyric songs. Also I knew if I wanted to be known or respected by the general hip hop community who loves it as much as I do, then I would have to do my homework and take a trip back in time where it all started in the 70s of South Bronx and learn it bit by bit.
What inspires me about the culture of hip hop is that it's the ONLY music form that you can express yourself in any way/shape/form possible. I believe other music genres like Rock, Pop, R’nb etc etc do not provide the same platform that hip hop offers. That’s why I love it
I've been in the music performing circle for 13 years. I have done 2 Albums (working on a 3rd atm), Radio Play/Magazine Articles WORLDWIDE, Fan base WORLDWIDE, Featured in Multiple Independent Films/TV Commercials and I enjoyed every moment of it. I wouldn’t want to stop because of the satisfaction and love I have in this art form.
Hip-Hop changed my life completely I’ll represent it until the day I die. I love it too much.....it saved my life
What is your favourite album/song by another artist?
My all-time favourite hip hop album which I can put on loop anytime, anywhere, any-moment
would have to be 50 Cent's 2003 debut album "Get Rich Or Die Tryin". Every song on that album is fire.
How did you learn to play music?
My first ever encounter with trying to rap or even write music/bars was around the age of 14
I remember I was sitting in my Art-Class at my old high school listening to "The Marshall Mathers LP 1" on my "iPod Classic" (which I still use today...and STILL WORKS) and starting to mimic Em's wordplay into my own like the twisted/psychotic rhyme-scream he use to write like
It was a simple method of spewing out my anger/depression/adolescent from the early age mindset I was in
Over the course of months I learnt more about the culture and I understood a lot more about the insight/avenues/elements within it, such as the likes of "Grandmaster Caz, KRS-One, Rakim, Public Enemy" etc I went through interviews about the genre and understood how the foundation/core of hip hop is thoroughly based on "Uniqueness" as an artist, which means you can create your own style and influences you along the way instead of being a copycat of others. And that is the only way you will be respected as a Hip Hop artist.
So, I decided to drop the ...I guess you can say "Aussie Slim Shady" vibe and use this art-form to express my pain. The process was surprisingly therapeutic and I hope my music can shed some light on someone who is listening and who is going through the same as my past.
How would you describe your music?
With me I grew up in the generation of Hip Hop where lyrics & making your music sound tight was everything to the listener and I’ve stuck by that from day 1. I've been told by staying with this root it made me unique as an artist and can identify my music immediately.
What usually inspires you to write music? Any favourite location or time that you are usually most creative?
The powerful thing about the art-form of Hip Hop is it’s a platform to express any matter / opinion / voices / thoughts / discussions / meaning through rhythm & poetry. The same degree of impact cannot be achieved by saying it verbally upright upfront.
My inspirations always come to me while I’m driving. It is meditative, therapeutic and inspiring when I am driving. I will put my earphones on and play on my iPod and inspirations and ideas just flow through miraculously.
