How did you first dabble in acting?
In 2013 after my second album “Understand Me” was released I tried to get my name ‘Mugzy’ out there as much as possible. So, I decided to try out acting as to both broaden my horizon and skills, and to get my name out there.
As with a lot of people I started off doing extra work and over time I got to know some directors who liked my work and we started collaborating. My unique way of getting into character was basing on my knowledge of my hip hop music and weaved it into my scripts and characters, which contributed to the creation of a number of key or main roles I was in.
Which actors inspire you? and why?
Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Mark Wahlberg, Bruce Willis, Jim Carrey
What are your favourite movie/tv/theatre productions?
Get Rich Or Die Tryin, 8Mile, POWER, Ballers, Empire, Entourage, Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air
The list goes on and on :D
How did you find acting as with music?
Even though majority of the roles I’ve successfully done along the way I relied a lot on my instincts, I did enjoy reading over a script and trying to get a sense of how a character would work while making it my own. This process made me understood better why some actors preferred to receive formal training as there were times that roles were out of my elements and I did need to work extra hard to get my imagination working to tackle them.
Which art form do you like better and why?
Although I am getting more offers in acting nothing beats live performing for me. The adrenaline run of performing live to an exciting live audience with your own materials is why I love music as an art form. This is particularly true for us Hip Hop artists.
Any upcoming acting performances or music tours?
I am currently working on the 3rd album before going back to gigs as I wanted to have new materials to keep my audience feeling fresh. It’s been 6 years since my last album as I was focusing on acting a lot because of the abundance of offers. But I do miss my music so I am working hard to get the 3rd album ready at the moment. I am excited just thinking about creating new works.
I have grown further in my understanding of music over the last few years and there are new beats I wanted to try out. So probably the 3rd album could be a 2-disc compilation if I couldn’t stop the creativity flow.
One thing for certain music lovers will hear from Mugzy soon in 2019.
