Deadpool and Wolverine

After much fanfare Deadpool and Wolverine is finally in theaters. Initial reception seems to be mixed with some criticizing that it's just another Marvel glorified cameo galore, while others said it did not solve all of the plot holes and created even more.

In order to avoid spoilers that ruined my experience, I went and saw it on the first day. And the end result? It's a movie I don't mind watching it again and again. For me it's entertaining and full of references throughout the Marvel history, and even real world history, that it just keeps giving.

Yes there are moments you wished Deadpool would shut up but then that's the character you are watching a movie about, so it will be unfair to criticize the very essence of the movie. Hugh Jackman coming back as Wolverine is really game for everything. Everything can be in the wind and everything is in the wind. How he managed to keep the Wolverine characterisation but fit into the larger Deadpool universe shows how good Hugh Jackman is.

For me, the most outstanding bits are not the jaw dropping cameos, but Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova. To say that she's a villain is a bit overstating, or maybe over simplifying. She's just someone out for fun without a moral compass. She got all that power so she just wants to have fun. Her inquisitiveness about the world and the people in this world may not have taught her anything about being a decent person, but she does know how to make the right decision when the time comes. Emma Corrine balanced these two aspects perfectly and created a character that you sometimes sympathize with. I just hope that Marvel will bring her back in the future because she is really a great character brought to life by Emma Corrin. It will be such a waste to just let the character go or just shelve the character without further exploration.

In terms of villany, people like to talk about villains in superhero movies, but I think Deadpool has moved past that concept a long time ago. As mentioned earlier Cassandra Nova in my opinion is not a straightforward villain. She just wants to enjoy the world in a way she understands and as it is, and even for Paradox, played by Matthew Macfayden, was just a TVA worker who could not cope after the events of Loki Season 2.  I think that is another aspect that you appreciate about Ryan Reynolds’ vision of Deadpool - everything is relative and everyone may have a view, it’s a matter of which one is more destructive and needs to be stopped.

And to all those who said Deadpool and Wolverine did not resolve all the plot holes in the Fox Marvel history, please remember that it's a Deadpool movie, not Sherlock Holmes. It's meant to be entertaining and not a mystery solving detective exercise. So just enjoy it. And after all, the Multiverse is complicated, so there will not be answers for everything.

I completely enjoyed Deadpool and Wolverine despite the hype. As long as you don't go in with a tunnel vision of expectation, you may enjoy it too.
